MATERIALS: *Crochet Hook "H" (5 mm) (or whichever size you need to obtain gauge) *4-Ply Worsted Weight Yarn - in your choice of variegated and matching solid color for border Model made using 9 skeins "Simply Soft" by Caron "Country Baby Ombre" in 2.5 ounce skeins and
2 skeins Bernat brand "Winter White" in 3 ounce skeins.
ABBREVIATIONS: ch = chain, dc = double crochet
INSTRUCTIONS:
ROW 1: With variegated yarn and H hook, ch 138. In the 8th ch from hook, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc (this is open shell pattern). [Skip 4 ch, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc] across to last ch. Dc in last ch, turn. (26 shells)
ROW 2: Ch 3. In ch-3 space of first shell, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc. Repeat in each ch-3 space across. Dc in top ch of the turning ch. Turn.
ROWS 3 - 66: Repeat Row 2. (do not finish off.)
BORDER ROUNDS: (worked in rounds) RND 1: Ch 3. Change to white yarn and work another row of open shells across the last row. Stitch one open shell into the corner and working along the side, skip the first turning ch-3 and stitch an open shell into the next turning ch-3 space. Repeat this across the side. Stitch one open shell into the corner, and continuing across the opposite side of the first row, stitch an open shell into each bottom hole of the first row shells. Stitch an open shell into the corner and finish up the last side in every other ch-3 space. Join with a slip stitch to top of dc of the first open shell.
RND 2: Slip stitch into next ch-3 space, ch 2, 1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in this same space. Work open shells in each ch-3 space around, stitching 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in each of the 4 corner shells. Join with slip stitch to top of ch-2.
RND 3: Change to variegated yarn and slip stitch into next ch-3 space. Ch 2, 1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in this same space. Work open shells in each ch-3 space around. At corners, stitch open shell in space between second and third dc of big corner shell on each side. Join with slip stitch to top of ch-2. Finish off.
RND 4: With white yarn, slip stitch into next ch-3 space, ch 2, 1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc into that same space. Work open shells in each ch-3 space around. At corners, work shell into ch-3 space of ROUND 2 (white yarn chain). Join with slip stitch to top of ch-2.
RND 5: Slip stitch into next ch-3 space. Ch 2, 1 dc, ch 3, 2 dc into same space. Work open shells around. At corners, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc into each corner shell ch-3 space. Join with slip stitch to top of ch-2. Finish off.
